Mark Tyson

I have spent the past 25 years collecting pottery - mostly turn of the century French Japonism, tea bowls and also contemporary ceramic art. Now that I am semi-retired, I wanted to get back to making ceramics.

I have spent the past 2 years trying to make the perfect Japanese tea bowl. I have made about 350 tea bowls so far and I still love making them. My tea bowls are hand formed by pinching, sometimes throwing, and carving the clay. I strive for organic forms that are comfortable in your hand and feel much more natural to hold and drink from than a cup with a handle. I try to give each piece a complex surface, some of which require multiple firings. Each of my tea bowls is a unique ceramic sculpture.
