I began working with clay over 20 years ago as a chance to escape while raising three (unbelievably awesome) kids. Over the years, working with, and around clay has become an essential, restorative part of my life.
I gravitate to making functional pottery because I love interacting with my pieces and having them become a part of everyday life. After all, who doesn’t have that favorite mug that they reach for every morning? The one that fits perfectly in the palm of their hand? To me pottery should feel as good as it looks, so I pay as much attention to the weight and feel of my pieces as I do to their form and finish.
Trained as a scientist, the urge to understand and explore the steps involved in transforming a lump of clay into a solid piece of pottery comes naturally to me. Working with clay and molding it into a piece of art is such a joyous endeavor. As a ceramic studio technician and a teacher at the Wallingford Community Arts Center, I have had the great fortune to delve deep into my own ceramics journey and help spread the joy of this art form to others. Pottery allows for a lifetime of exploration. So many shapes to be made, so many surface techniques to explore - one can never get bored!
