12 Weeks
$250 CSS/HYS Members/ $265 Non-members

This is a class that explores strategies for waking up the skin of your pots. Taking advantage of the consistency of the electric kiln, we will develop ways to build images in the clay itself, under the glaze, in the glaze and on top of the glaze. Drawing is only one way to marry the surface to the form. We will examine other strategies as well. We will use hand building and wheel throwing techniques to create forms we have dreamed about from the start. For beginners and those with clay experience.

In this class we will explore the how and why of ceramic sculpture. Learning by example and exploration we will discover how to make sculptures that survive the rigors of firing, as we develop the theme and content of our pieces. We will study contemporary work and develop themes through group investigations and individual quest. Ceramic sculpture offers opportunities to finish clay with unusual surfaces and incorporate other media. Wire, leather, metallic patinas, paint, glazes...there is a world of significant form waiting for you to claim.

Introduce yourself to the ancient and honorable wheel. We will study pots made thousands of years ago and pots made yesterday. We'll learn how to use the wheel, and how to combine wheel-thrown forms with handbuilt forms to make bowls, plates, mugs, teapots, vases and forms we have yet to invent.
